| From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward, naturalists flocked to Lanzarote, fascinated by the flora and geology of this volcanic island off Morocco. Later, the landscapes of the the Canary Islands and plentiful sunshine led to the development for of tourism, which started its boom in 1960. Today, 10 million tourists, mostly Germans (29 percent) and British (37 percent) visit the archipelago every year. Its coasts host people on both short summer holidays and longer-term stays, especially by retirees who stay all year long. As a result, the infrastructure on the islands have has been heavily built up. Aware of the landscape degradation and the ecological impact of such infrastructures, Lanzarote has hosted two world global conventions on sustainable tourism. Dealing with this industry’sthe environmental impact of tourism is all the more urgent because over the next 15 years the sector is expected to grow at an average of 4 percent per year over the next 15 years and the number of tourists arrivals is estimated to reach 1.6 billion arrivals in 2020. It is the first Tourism is the number one sector of industry in the world in terms of revenue and jobs today.
