Crowd in Abengourou, Ivory Coast (6°44’N, 3°29’W).

Africa has a population of 800 million, making up 13 percent of the human race. This colorful crowd, enthusiastically waving to the photographer, was photographed in Abengourou, in eastern Ivory Coast. These children and adolescents remind us of the country’s youthfulness; as in most of the African continent, 40 percent of the population is under 15 years of age. The country’s birth rate in 2003 was 4.7 children per woman, which is representative of the average for the continent (the world average is 2.7). Modernization and cultural and socio-economic influences have gradually lowered the birth rate. The ravages of the Aids epidemic in Subsaharan Africa (home to 70 percent of the total 39.5 million people infected in the world) will have a severe impact on the region’s demography: every day in Africa 5,800 people die of the Aids virus and another 7 700 become infected.
