As symbolized by this student playing basketball in the courtyard of his Los Angeles school, sports are an integral part of the North American educational system. Athletic ability can often help students to win college scholarships. In the United States, where school is obligatory from age six to sixteen, 27% of the population goes on to college, one of the highest rates of university education in the world. But access to education remains very uneven around the world. Less than one-third of children in Africa can get to Secondary education, and primary school is far from universal: 115 million children (1 out of 5) in developing countries do not attend school. Today, at the dawn of the third millennium, one adult out of five can neither read nor write; of these approximately 862 million illiterate adults, 99% are found in developing countries, and two-thirds of them are women.
