Housing near Miami, Florida, United States (26°24’ N, 80°11’ W).

Famous for its beaches, Art Deco hotels, and luxury homes of movie stars, the region around Miami also contains residential suburbs with sober but comfortable tract houses, built on former swampland that was dried up in the early 20th century. These mushrooming cities meet the demand of a population that keeps growing. Miami is located in Dade County, a center of economic development, a place of refuge for expatriates, and a favorite retreat for retirees. It has become the most densely populated region in Florida, with more than 2 million inhabitants. Florida was still largely wild at the beginning of the 20th century but today it is the fourth-largest state in population. Its population has doubled in the past twenty years to almost 16 million, and 85 percent live in urban areas.
